Dentons facilitates historic concession for Romania's first privately operated airport and the world’s first energetically independent airport
March 26, 2024 – Global law firm Dentons advised Avant Airports, the leader of the consortium which included Avtomagistral-Pivden, on a concession contract for a 350 hectare decommissioned military airfield in Alexeni, which will be converted to an airport for low-cost airlines and cargo. The consortium has committed to investing €400 million to build the new airport.
Romanian-headquarted Avant Airports will serve as the developer, while Ukraine’s Avtomagistral-Pivden will be the construction company on the project. Located 66 kilometers east of Bucharest, Alexeni Airport will be Romania's first privately operated airport. Furthermore, the project will include a 40 MW photovoltaic park, which will make Alexeni the world’s first energy-independent airport.
Dentons advised the client on all stages of the project, beginning with the structuring of the consortium, continuing through all bidding documentation procedures, and culminating in the successful awarding of the concession contract.
Corporate partner Cristian Popescu led Dentons’ team on the project in collaboration with senior associate Cosmin Roman.
Cristian Popescu commented: "We are honored to have been part of the team that guided and supported the leader of the consortium in this groundbreaking endeavor. This project exemplifies the immense potential and growth opportunities in Romania, particularly in the realm of infrastructure concessions and development projects."
