Never Alone - Friends of the Elderly Association
Kantar's 2021 national Never Alone study shows that 1 in 4 seniors experience a high degree of loneliness and have no social support system to reach out to in times of need. Loneliness is a global problem, bringing mistrust, isolation, and serious implications for the health of older people and hastening the end of life. The public social care system has no solutions to this situation and very few organizations work to alleviate loneliness among the elderly. Even though this is part of the biggest 3 problems of the elderly in our country, loneliness is not recognized as an issue by any law in Romania.
Never Alone - Friends of the Elderly Association is following an international model, implemented over the last 75 years in more than 15 countries around the world. We are mobilizing volunteers, resources, and communities to offer seniors a less lonely life. More than 300 seniors from 10 different counties are receiving emotional, practical, and material support weekly from volunteers as part of our home visiting program. In addition, over the past two years, we have also developed community programs that offer ways for the elderly in Ploiesti, Braila, and Constanta to spend their free time. In Bucharest, we have opened a social/community center that fights loneliness, both through activities that help the elderly reconnect with contemporary society and activities that help them find a new social circle. This year, we will expand the network of weekly community workshops in Brasov and Cluj-Napoca and open a new social/community center in Ploiesti.
These community programs reach more than 300 elderly people, and we are present in the lives of more than 500 elderly people every week through all the programs of Never Alone.
